Note: 3 Q’s = Good. A solid choice. It was entertaining and I recommend it. My rating system is explained on this page.
I had the opportunity to read a galley copy of this book from the author, and then I went ahead and purchased the Kindle version today as well. Baby’s Breath by Russell Jones isn’t a typical book that I would pick up. But I’ve been trying to read more indie authors lately, and I follow Jones on social media, so why not?
First of all, this book should dispel any assumptions about the quality of indie books. The writing in Baby’s Breath is outstanding. Even if you aren’t interested in the plot (I can’t imagine), you’ll appreciate Jones’ command of language and razor-sharp wit.
His main character, Erin, is a young teacher who has just survived a school shooting in her elementary school classroom as the novel opens. Erin is snarky and rebellious. Jones’ depiction of her hypocritical, extremely religious mother is perfect.
Jones’ prose is at times shockingly beautiful and unexpected for a book of this genre. Still, it’s very consumable, making this a great weekend read or something to take on vacation. Also, the dialogue in this novel is natural and often hilarious.
The plot is a whirlwind of action as Erin, our protagonist, follows a path to try to discover the shooter who destroyed the lives of the children in her care. I’m keeping this review brief to avoid spoilers, but suffice it to say, there are twists and turns aplenty, and I had no idea what was going to happen next.
This book was definitely worth my time. I’ll be keeping Jones on my radar for future releases.
